About Us
Our Mission
Little Stream Farm is the heart project of Sam and Peggy Edwards. While serving in the US Coast Guard, their many moves, life on base and lack of the ability to grow their own food were the impetus behind this idea of theirs. Even with retirement many years away, they dreamed of a home and farm that would serve as an inspirational hub for our family and community. Their daughter Esra, who is autistic and wheelchair-bound, inspires them to dedicate their energies to helping her gain the greatest breadth of independence. This spills over into all aspects of their home as they design an environment that promotes inclusion, independence, and a joyful immersion in the domestic arts.
As a for-profit small-scale venture, Little Stream Farm is committed to the principles of regenerative agriculture and health freedom advocacy. We strive to cultivate the land responsibly, produce nutrient-dense food, and advocate for holistic health practices that empower families to make informed choices.
Our vision encompasses creating a strong, creative brand and online presence that is recognized worldwide for:
Service-Minded Regenerative Agriculture: Promoting and practicing sustainable farming methods that restore and enhance the natural ecosystem while providing delicious and healthy food to our local community.
Health Freedom Advocacy: Championing the right to choose natural and holistic health practices, and sharing knowledge that supports informed health decisions.
Universal Design: Ensuring that our farm and homestead are accessible and welcoming to all, particularly individuals with special needs, empowering them to achieve greater independence and participation in all aspects of farm life.
Special Needs Inclusion: Creating an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can contribute, learn, and thrive, with a special focus on supporting families like ours.
Joyful Immersion in the Domestic Arts: Celebrating the art of homemaking and encouraging a return to hands-on creativity through workshops, events, and resources that inspire and educate.
Through our commitment to these values, Little Stream Farm aims to be a beacon of hope, innovation, and community spirit. We invite you to join us in this journey to create a nurturing and beautiful future for all.
Our Story
Background on “Give, Said the Little Stream”
“Give, Said the Little Stream” is a beloved children’s song written by the prolific hymn writer, Fanny Crosby. Born on March 24, 1820, Fanny Crosby became one of the most famous and significant hymnists in American history, despite being blind from infancy due to a medical mishap. Her indomitable spirit and profound faith inspired her to write over 8,000 hymns and gospel songs during her lifetime.
History and Inspiration
Fanny Crosby wrote “Give, Said the Little Stream” in the 19th century. The song beautifully encapsulates themes of generosity, kindness, and selflessness through the simple metaphor of a little stream giving water to everything it touches. In her writings, Crosby often used nature as a means to express divine principles, emphasizing the importance of living a life of compassion and service.
The song reflects Crosby’s personal philosophy and her strong desire to encourage others, especially children, to live by these values. Her own life was a testament to these principles. Despite her blindness, Crosby did not view her disability as a limitation but as an opportunity to inspire others through her words and music. She dedicated herself to helping others and advocated for charitable causes, including education for the blind and support for those in need.
Lyrics and Meaning
The lyrics of “Give, Said the Little Stream” are simple yet profoundly impactful:
"Give," said the little stream,
"Give, oh give, give, oh give."
"Give," said the little stream,
As it hurried down the hill;
"I'm small, I know, but wherever I go
The fields grow greener still."
Singing, singing all the day,
"Give away, oh give away."
Singing, singing all the day,
"Give, oh give away."
This song teaches that no act of kindness is too small and that everyone, regardless of their size or means, can make a significant positive impact. The imagery of the stream nourishing the fields it passes symbolizes how generosity and kind actions can bring about growth and beauty in the world.
